INTRODUCTION TO MEDITATION Friday 25 - Sunday 27 May 2007
Retreat with Leela SCA resident teacher
There are 2 main kinds of meditation: calm abiding (shamatha) and insight (vipassana) meditation. Tranquility meditation brings peace to our minds and this helps us to be more peaceful, relaxed and at ease in our lives. Insight meditation brings understanding of ourselves at increasingly deeper levels. You will be guided towards having insights of your own by the Dharma teachings, during which we will examine the 3 Marks of Existence, which serve as Doors of Liberation. Stepping through any of these doors with deep understanding has the power to free the mind and liberate us from suffering. You will be taught meditation techniques the practice of which increasingly brings more freedom and peace as we get less caught up in the negative thoughts and afflictive emotions that destroy our happiness.
LEELA VERITY has degrees in Law and Psychology. She has studied Buddhism and meditation overseas in India, Nepal and France, under Tibetan Buddhist Masters, His Holiness the DALAI LAMA and Lama ZOPA RINPOCHE, and Zen Master THICH NHAT HANH. She is an ordained member of Thich Nhat Hanh’s Order of Interbeing, and spends time at his monastery in France every 2nd year, doing retreat and receiving further teachings.
Leela is founder and director of SAT CHIT ANAND Buddhist Centre, where it has been her joy to conduct meditation courses, host teachings and retreats for the last 6 years. Her approach is non-sectarian and very accessible to Westerners. She transmits ancient wisdom teachings within a modern context, combining philosophy and practice in an engaging and user-friendly way.
